Fortnite voice chat software on Nintendo Switch is available to all

All Nintendo Switch developers can now utilise the voice chat software used on the Switch version of Fortnite, potentially spelling the end of Nintendo’s awkward phone app.

Vivox, who power the voice chat system in Fortnite, have announced they will be making their text and voice chat system available to all Switch developers – creating a new alternative to Nintendo’s notoriously terrible voice chat options.

The Vivox solution enables players to simply plug in a pair of headphones with a microphone into the headphone jack, skipping over Nintendo’s convoluted mobile phone app which launched with Splatoon 2.

Vivox’s new software will allow developers to utilise their voice chat solution on Switch titles, which will also extend to games on the platform which have cross-play functionality with PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

It all begs the question of why Nintendo simply wouldn’t do this themselves – considering now most external developers are likely to take this option for future titles.

Unfortunately, Nintendo are unlikely to use the system in their own first party titles, as it’s always been clear that it’s not just a technical issue for them but that they’re also worried about how non-family friendly people tend to be online.

Fortnite on Switch launched in June 2018 with in-game voice chat, with other titles like Warframe following suit with their own chat options.

Along with Splatoon 2, the Nintendo Switch Online app also functions with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
