Games Inbox: What did you think of the Doom Eternal reveal?

Spread the love

GC, you reignited my love for grid, turn-based strategy games with your excellent reviews for Fire Emblem: Awakenings and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Both amazing games. I have very fond memories of Vandal Hearts on PS1 when I was a youngster.

I’ve read these pages since the Digitiser days and now feel the need to write in for the first time about The Banner Saga. A turn-based strategy game in a fantasy-based Viking world. I’m about halfway through and it’s right up there with the other games I’ve mentioned. Lovely art design and music which really pull you into the world.

I think you mentioned in your review (as a criticism) that having the majority of the dialogue in written format led to the game feeling like you were reading an eBook; which it does, but it’s in a way that makes you feel you’re reading a half decent fantasy novel, which is fully and amazingly interactive. I’ve never played a game where I’ve had to genuinely go make a coffee for five minutes to ponder my response to another character’s question. The feeling of weight to your choices is immense.

I have played on Switch and I understand the saves to the sequel carry over. However, I have the second one on Xbox (from Games with Gold). Is the continuation worth buying the second one on Switch, or should I just play my Xbox version? Cheers!

GC: That’s tricky, because it involves paying for a game you’ve already got. But if you’re enjoying it that much we’d have to say that the way your decisions carry on is a key appeal, especially by the time you get to the third game. The retail-only Banner Saga Trilogy, which is out next month, might be your best bet for at least a minor discount.
