Games Inbox: Do you have a new video game ritual?

Spread the love

I have been following the letters that have been coming in thick and fast from readers bemoaning Battle Royale. Now I have not been a long-time reader like many of your contributors but I am sure this is not the first time an issue like this has come up with multiplayer game modes

I am not sure of the history of online multiplayer but it must of started with one game mode on one game, for the point of this letter let’s say Deathmatch. Deathmatch was a success and more games came out featuring a Deathmatch mode. Then came Team Deathmatch and again more games came out with Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. And so this continues with Domination, Capture the Flag, etc. So along comes Battle Royale a new multiplayer game mode and the gaming community is in uproar. It’s just another game mode. What’s the problem?

Personally, I like objective style multiplayer but do I groan about Deathmatch style games? No, I just don’t play them. I do enjoy PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, I like the tension it creates. But I still spend time playing conquest on Battlefield 1 and battling over flags. Imitation is the best form of flattery, it also drives innovation. I can’t wait to see what the new Call Of Duty brings to the genre, with its generally smaller maps and tighter gun control or what Battlefield V with its open maps and a more realistic approach to gunplay. Halo with its more vertical maps would also have bought something to the table but alas.

Just because you don’t like something a game has to offer, other people will and no one is forcing you to play it.

GC: We don’t think many people were complaining about Battle Royale itself, more the fear that companies are going to saturate the market with clones and copycats. It remains to be seen whether that will happen.
